Gift of Insurance

Gift of Insurance

"I look forward to honoring my parents at EIU for years to come. It now makes me a bigger part of Eastern as well." - Austin Apgar

Austin decided to honor his mother for her birthday and other holidays by creating an endowment supporting campus beautification. It was her passion for gardening that led him to select this beneficiary area. He began working with the EIU Office of Philanthropy who suggested that he consider the paid-up insurance program as a way to maximize his gifts. Making the gift was easy. Austin had to submit to a short physical exam and questionnaire as he would with any life insurance policy, and work directly with the insurance agent representing the company, but it was easy. It was a great way to maximize gift without a lot of cash outlay.

Apgar is the son of EIU alums George ('86) and Kalah Rund Apgar ('90), was raised on a farm near Villa Grove, Illinois. Austin attended Villa Grove High School where he distinguished himself in academics and sports.

After graduating from high school in May 2000, Austin enrolled in the University of Illinois to study agribusiness with an emphasis on farm management. He was involved in many student organizations including the Student Advancement Committee, ACE Club, and Intra-fraternity Council. He was also a member of IlliDell of Alpha Gamma Sigma fraternity, where he gained leadership experience and until most recently, served as Treasurer on the Board of Directors. Austin received his degrees from the University of Illinois in the Department of Agricultural and Consumer Economics studying agricultural economics and farm management. Austin has expanded and is actively involved in the family farm operation, and has become involved with agribusiness in the East Central Illinois region. He continues to involve others in outreach activities that expose them to agriculture.

Apgar is a member of the Douglas County Farm Bureau, Illinois Society of Professional Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers, and Ace External Advisory Committee.

Although Austin is not an EIU alum, he has a great respect for Eastern given the education his parents both received. Austin's father was an Administrative Information Systems major and a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon, and his mother majored in Recreation Administration. Both parents share a deep love for their time at EIU. "I look forward to honoring my parents at EIU for years to come. It now makes me a bigger part of Eastern as well."
